Where do the richest people in the world live?

Everyone dreams of being rich. It just seems like all your troubles go away and you can buy and do whatever you want. A world where you don’t have to work but spend your days on the beaches, lounging in pools, going to events and just doing whatever you want. For some this is a reality, but some keep working until they have more money than they will ever need. So do these people at least live luxuriously? Where would you say your permanent residence is? Do they live in a beachfront villa or a penthouse suite in downtown New York City? Luckily we did the research. Look below to find out where the richest of the rich live and if they do it in style.

Cameo Island, Greece

jeff bezos

It’s hard to tie billionaire Bezos to a specific place of residence, but it’s believed he spends a lot of time in Seattle. Bezos is the founder and CEO of Amazon and has a current net worth of $177 billion. Bezos owns a number of properties in the United States, including several apartments in New York City, the Warner Estate in Beverly Hills, Los Angeles, a large estate in Seattle, homes in Washington DC and in Washington State. The Warner Estate was his most recent purchase, a nine-acre property that cost him a whopping $165 million! Bezos’ 30,000-acre ranch in Van Horn, Texas was purchased to remind his children of his own upbringing and to spend time at his grandparents’ ranch. Though he’s spent millions on renovations, we’re assuming it’s not quite like the ranch he grew up on. Bezos also uses the ranch for his private space company, Blue Origin.

Elon Musk

Elon Musk’s residence is a bit more confusing than Bezos’. Musk previously owned several mansions in California, but has primarily sold most of his apartment portfolio in recent years. He most recently sold his home in San Francisco for $37.5 million and is believed to currently own only one home in the Bay Area. Musk did this because he chose to lead a more minimalist lifestyle. It seems Musk has even followed up on this after it was reported that he lives in a studio-size rental apartment that he is said to have rented from his own rocket company, SpaceX. Although Musk has a net worth of $169.8 billion, the box he currently lives in is estimated at just $50,000. Musk announced in 2020 that he would be moving permanently to Texas to focus on his biggest projects, which are based there. Texas is home to Tesla’s new factory, while SpaceX also has a facility here. We’re wondering where the rest of Musk’s family currently resides, there sure isn’t room in Elon’s studio rental!

Bernard Arnault

Arnault competes with Musk and Bezos as the three yo-yos for the top spots on Forbes’ list of riches. The 72-year-old made his name (and much success) with his luxury group LVMH, a group that oversees luxury brands like Louis Vuitton, Hennessy, Christian Dior and Moet. Arnault may have been born in Roubaix, Lille, but he now resides in a mega chateau in Bordeaux, France. The castle is 150 years old and surrounded by various vineyards. The residence has been in the family since 1998 and is truly stunning. Arnault also owns the Castle of Saint-Remy-des-Landes in Clairefontaine-en-Yvelines and a large estate in Paris. He also owns a $35 million 54-acre island in the Bahamas. To top it off, he also has a glamorous Belgian apartment in the center of Brussels in his portfolio.

Bill Gates

The Microsoft co-founder has a net worth of $124 billion and is a permanent resident of a mansion overlooking Lake Washington in Medina, Washington. The property is 66,000 square feet and has managed to incorporate technology into its design. In 2009, the property racked up $1.063 million in property taxes, not that Gates really cares, but it’s pretty substantial! The home was designed by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson and Cutler-Anderson, an architect couple from Bainbridge Island, Washington. The house features a private library with a domed roof and oculus. The home features a 60 foot swimming pool with an underwater music system, a 2500 square foot exercise facility and a 1000 square foot dining room. We’re not sure why these types of rooms have to be this size, but we’re sure they’re immaculate.
